I kept switching back and forth to the game last night, each time wincing to see what the latest score was. Quite an unbelievable game, and rather historic as well:
The last time the Braves won a game despite giving up 14 runs was July 23, 1951, against the Pirates, and the franchise was located in Boston.
The game also led to possibly the best quote Bobby Cox has given in a loooong time. This one is quite Yogi Berra-esque:
"If you're going to play those, you're better off being on the winning side."
On the mound, I hated to see Charlie Morton be given such a huge lead and then walk out the next inning and blow it. I still don't know what to make of Morton's future as a starter... I doubt the Braves do either.

I actually played video games after it became an 10-9 game thinking “i know where this is going.” I turned back over after an hour or so, and it was only the 6th or 7th, 13-13. Went back to play more. Flipped back later, and it was 14-13, so i watched the rest. It didn’t exactly feel historical, but at least they won.
It was extremely frustrating watching Morton not be able to go 5, or 4 for that matter. None of these young guys (minus Jurrjens) are staking a claim for a rotation spot next year, and i ’m sure Wren is thrilled about that (Offseason checklist: left fielder, 4 starting pitchers. No problem!) I think at the most, one rotation spot should go to Morton, JoJo, and Campillo next year. As things have gone the past few years, they end up in the rotation anyway b/c of injuries.
10-4 - September 3, 2008
Campillo has sucked something awful lately, but I don’t think it’s fair to lump him in their with Morton and Reyes.
Smoltz's Beard - September 3, 2008
^----
Campillo is a legit big league pitcher. He’s a little gassed form the innings, as he’s missing/hanging more pitches. But he also needs to make adjustments cause everyone is sitting back on the offspeed stuff. Maybe bring in the 88 MPH heat a little more often.
VictorW - September 3, 2008
So crazy...
no game thread today?!
Lizziebeth - September 3, 2008
No kidding! I’m actually around today, but alas…
BTW Yunel Vidro’d. Weird.
VegasAces - September 3, 2008
Thanks, I just have radio in the office, but am DVRing it for viewing later.
Lizziebeth - September 3, 2008
Didn't we come up with a new one..
..for Vidro since he’s no longer playing after Seattle DFA’d him?
RainDelay - September 3, 2008
Yeah, I thought so but I can’t remember what it is for the life of me. So I decided to stick with the ol’ standby.
VegasAces - September 3, 2008
Molina I think
I still prefer Vidro
VictorW - September 3, 2008
After the series in Washington
It may as well be “Yunel-ing”
royhobbs - September 3, 2008
Sad but true
VictorW - September 3, 2008
The Rev off to a good start, looking to solidify his 2009 rotation spot…
VegasAces - September 3, 2008
Watch
Today’s game be like 3-1 with maybe 8 combined hits.
royhobbs - September 3, 2008
If we get the three, that’s cool with me. I know we’ve lost hope, but it’s still nice to get some wins and remember what it feels like.
VegasAces - September 3, 2008
Hope for a successful season, perhaps
But I’m always hoping for a good game . . .
royhobbs - September 3, 2008
very good point
VegasAces - September 3, 2008
Your optimism (that the 3 will be ours) scares me a little…
Hoping it will be, though!
Lizziebeth - September 3, 2008
Anybody hearing Pete?
talking about all the player having “guides” to take them to the park individually instead of on the team bus…sheesh.
Lizziebeth - September 3, 2008
that makes more sense
i’ve been thinking he’s been saying “guy” “we need a guy”.
10-4 - September 3, 2008
ok,they are saying "guy"
10-4 - September 3, 2008
I hear it now
Lizziebeth - September 3, 2008
Cut 'em
Use that money towards paying talent. For the matter, cut the toilet paper budget at the Ted, and be like UGA and encourage patrons to conserve flushes. “If it’s yellow, let it mellow, if it’s brown, flush it down”
royhobbs - September 3, 2008
ha ha ha, and
Riding the bus encourages ‘bonding’, and discussion of strategy…no?
Lizziebeth - September 3, 2008
Ever since Jocks & Jills went under...
The Braves need to hire their shuttle bus driver. They would never ever get anywhere late, and the fun of the rides might make the players relax and unwind a bit.
royhobbs - September 3, 2008
Anyone applying for "the guy"?
10-4 - September 3, 2008
I would if I still had my first car...
a 1976 wine colored (ok, purple) AMC Pacer. yeeeaaahhh.
Lizziebeth - September 3, 2008
And no, I’m not that old…it was!
Lizziebeth - September 3, 2008
Mine was a 1984 Pontiac Parisienne
It was four years younger than me. I could fit Pete, Joe, Chip, Boog and his hair, Jake, and the Lemmer, and still have room for their bags. Man could that car do donuts.
10-4 - September 3, 2008
Ha ha ha ha! I also had an ’86 Olds Delta 88 at one point, so I know what you mean. I hit a concrete retaining wall with it, and it only knocked out the parking light and put a 1" crimp in the bumper.
Lizziebeth - September 3, 2008
Funny you should mention the 88!
My buddy in high school had an 88. Whoever got to school first would get rammed in the bumper by the other. Those iron to iron bumper collisions were good clean fun. We also use to push each other across the school parking lot.
10-4 - September 3, 2008
Ha ha
Sounds like good times!
Lizziebeth - September 3, 2008
Three pitch K on Uggla?
Wow, that doesn’t happen often.
royhobbs - September 3, 2008
Over on the AJC blog, Carroll Rogers said the writers in the botth did a rough attendance count at gametime and came up with 579.
10-4 - September 3, 2008
That’s poor even by Marlins standards.
VegasAces - September 3, 2008
All that being said, I really look forward to eventually getting down there to watch some games. I’m sure I could get at least one game ball or something, and I love Cuban food and beaches.
royhobbs - September 3, 2008
I think it would be fun. Do we have any good cuban food in Atl? I’ve only been to Havana Sandwich Shop
Lizziebeth - September 3, 2008
Hmm, there is only one tiny little shack on 14th street that makes some awesome Cuban sandwiches, but that’s all I know of…
royhobbs - September 3, 2008
For all the food I’ve eaten and enjoyed in my life, I’ve never had a Cuban sandwich. What exactly have I been missing out on?
VegasAces - September 3, 2008
Usually smoked pork and/or ham, spicy mustard, pickles and sometimes peppers and light onions. Often toasted up like a panini sandwich.
royhobbs - September 3, 2008
i eat Cuban alot then. Minus the peppers.
10-4 - September 3, 2008
Sounds good. Damn good actually.
VegasAces - September 3, 2008
I went to a place in Maryland that cheated and used chopped pork instead, with the ham. It was still a good sandwich, but if it’s not thinly-sliced pork loin, it loses points in my book.
royhobbs - September 3, 2008
This conversation is making me VERY hungry
VictorW - September 3, 2008
And also in text, completely oblivious
That HanRam just killed one.
royhobbs - September 3, 2008
We flew you in on AirTran just for that...
Lizziebeth - September 3, 2008
+1
10-4 - September 3, 2008
Yes I am still thinking about Cuban food
This is what my idea Cuban sandwich looks like:
royhobbs - September 3, 2008
Oh yeah
How could I forget about Papi’s on Ponce? Never been there, but the big painted wall of the Cuban flag is a giveaway.
royhobbs - September 3, 2008
Oh yeah! Haven’t been down Ponce in a while. Yahoo is listing La Fonda as Cuban…interesting.
Lizziebeth - September 3, 2008
Hmm
The guy who runs Papi’s looks like the Dos Equis guy
royhobbs - September 3, 2008
whoa
Lizziebeth - September 3, 2008
Do the Carrabas guys have any relatives from Cuba?
10-4 - September 3, 2008
Screw this noise
By the end of this week, I will have had a Cuban sandwich.
royhobbs - September 3, 2008
Yuni?
problem?
Lizziebeth - September 3, 2008
WHY YUNEL WHY
VictorW - September 3, 2008
Why what? I only have GameDay, don’t leave me hanging here. All I have to go by is “Injury Delay”.
VegasAces - September 3, 2008
he's grabbing his hands & shoulder.
left game
10-4 - September 3, 2008
Took a sort of funny swing and fell as he was running to first
Reaggravated the shoulder
VictorW - September 3, 2008
Maybe it's for the best
That will actually let Yunel get some much needed rest while Lillibridge is up to let him stay inactive.
royhobbs - September 3, 2008
Yeah Lillibridge deserves a chance
And Yunel needs the rest anyway. May cost him a Gold Glove, but it’ll probably go to someone stupid like Stephen Drew or some other contender anyway.
VictorW - September 3, 2008
Maybe
But other than Drew, has there been any other SS in the NL that would be worthy contention? Reyes and Rollins were pretty lame compared to their par, Hanley’s never been considered upper-echelon, Tulo was hurt a lot this year, as was Furcal, Greene. Wilson, Keppinger, Tejeda, Hardy, etc . . .
royhobbs - September 3, 2008
Okay
I take it back about Reyes and Rollins, their numbers are about the same as always, notably Reyes’ FP% down a little while Rollins is actually up a little. But Rollins’ injuries, and Reyes just hasn’t looked as big of a factor against us this season thus far, both offensively or defensively.
royhobbs - September 3, 2008
I pulled Drew out of no where since he's probably below average defensively
Tulo is the only SS as good as Yunel in the NL. Maybe Caeser Itzturis too, but no one knows who he is. Hardy is good, but doesn’t have the reputation. It’ll probably go to Reyes or Rollins because of reputation depending on who wins the division or maybe something really stupid like Theriot for being short, scrappy, and on the Cubs.
VictorW - September 3, 2008
This might be a lame statement
But Escobar’s turned in more Web Gems than everyone else. When you make catches that fool even the camera men, as they zoom out into left field, while Yunel’s laying in the infield dirt with a ball in his glove, that says a lot.
royhobbs - September 3, 2008
Haha that's pretty funny
Is there a video list of these or something? I catch it on ESPN every now and then, but I’ve only seen a fraction of them.
VictorW - September 3, 2008
Not that I know of
But there are instances like that 17-inning marathon where the Astros were threatening, and the infield came in, and Yunel robbed a screamer away from like Hunter Pence or someone. The tv cameras went zooming into LF, while Yunel lay in the dirt, and unfortunately clearly re-aggravated his shoulder on the catch, and even the fans didn’t know that they were supposed to be standing and applauding right away.
royhobbs - September 3, 2008
Yeah that play was crazy
The infield was in too, which makes it a hell of a lot harder. He had another catch like that against some other team in another bases loaded situation. I wanna say Cards or Marlins, but I can’t remember.
VictorW - September 3, 2008
Effing mlb.com
Their “archive” for individual players goes back like two weeks tops. I was expecting to see “Escobar diving catch / shows off range” several times, but instead see links for Mike Hampton starts, and RBI base hits.
http://www.mlive.com/fantasysports/index.ssf/2008/08/baserunning_defense_have_big_i.html
An interesting fantasy sports article written fairly recently, has Yunel Escobar by a wide margin over all other shortstops in the league . . . paragraphs 6 & 7.
royhobbs - September 3, 2008
Ah yes they use plus/minus
It’s pretty much the best fielding stat since they just review tons of video. Too bad you need a subscription for it.
Surprised Izturis wasn’t on there. Revised Zone Rating likes him. And he can’t hit at all, so you’d think he’d at least be able to field.
VictorW - September 3, 2008
Hey, another injury!
I’m seriously thinking of writing a book about the season. 2008: The Season From Hell. I think it would be a good read. If only i had writing skills, and knew people.
10-4 - September 3, 2008
KJ!
Lizziebeth - September 3, 2008
Kelly's heating up
VictorW - September 3, 2008
Wow +1 to FYF for that hustle
VictorW - September 3, 2008
“splits the wickets”??
Chip’s on a roll today…
Lizziebeth - September 3, 2008
Wow, MLB Gameday audio way behind.
10-4 - September 3, 2008
lol
3-1 score, let’s keep it that way
royhobbs - September 3, 2008
Was just about to say, there’s the prediction coming true…
VegasAces - September 3, 2008
Seven
Combined hits, a one-hitter the rest of the way would be unlikely…
royhobbs - September 3, 2008
Hooray got the bunt down with 2 strikes
VictorW - September 3, 2008
Campillo's getting squeezed
That’s the second strikeout that’s turned into a walk.
VictorW - September 3, 2008
Uuuuugh.
Lizziebeth - September 3, 2008
Poor Campillo
gets screwed by a bad call and then the lights on a pop up
VictorW - September 3, 2008
Er the lights = the sun
VictorW - September 3, 2008
See?! Low attendance = very entertaining
able to hear Bobby’s argument on the radio, ha ha ha…
Lizziebeth - September 3, 2008
I heard a couple of f-bombs in there.
BullManUGA - September 3, 2008
Even better when afterwards Joe says something like "I didn't hear what Bobby said."
VictorW - September 3, 2008
They used to ask the viewers not to read lips.
BullManUGA - September 3, 2008
WTF? Prado is hurting?
I guess that’s why he was playing 1st.
BullManUGA - September 3, 2008
LOL @ the Tommy Boy reference.
BullManUGA - September 3, 2008
hmmm
missed it.
Lizziebeth - September 3, 2008
They were showing where Andres Galaragga hit his 529ft homer.
Using the telestrator they did the bit when Tommy gets hit in the head and they go to the diner.
“It doesn’t hurt here or here so much as right here.”
BullManUGA - September 3, 2008
Am I crazy?
Okay, I know I’m crazy, but I’m also at the mercy of Gamecast. How did the Marlins score a third run? I’m only seeing a HanRam solo-shot, and one Hermida RBI single. . . 2 runs?
royhobbs - September 3, 2008
Was it Ross?
Did he score on the single as well?
royhobbs - September 3, 2008
Willingham singled Ross in
Right before Hermida’s single
VictorW - September 3, 2008
LOL, Uggla: "Bullshit! Are you kidding me?"
I could hear it clear as day.
BullManUGA - September 3, 2008
+1
ha ha ha
Lizziebeth - September 3, 2008
Man I was out of the room when that happened
Missed the hilarity
VictorW - September 3, 2008
Those guys are so cute when they’re mad…it’s like getting yelled at by an elf
Lizziebeth - September 3, 2008
lol
On Monday, I heard Paul Lo Duca saying “That’s fucking terrible” clear as day when he was called out by Chad Fairchild.
royhobbs - September 3, 2008
Notice there’s less whistling to be heard since Yuni left the game?
Lizziebeth - September 3, 2008
Whoa whoa two hands Kelly
VictorW - September 3, 2008
"A female guy"
The Professor really bailed Chip out of that one…
Lizziebeth - September 3, 2008
ALL sorts of tasteless jokes
Can go to Chip’s gender confusion.
royhobbs - September 3, 2008
LOL
Lizziebeth - September 3, 2008
The Debil strikes again
Lizziebeth - September 3, 2008
Wow
Normally Cody Ross just homers all the time; I was expecting a grand slam there. Maybe Fredi wants to see if Nunez will walk in another run?
royhobbs - September 3, 2008
well, duh, Fredi....
sddbaker - September 3, 2008
Crap
rare mistake by Heap
Lizziebeth - September 3, 2008
Since we have nothing else to talk about...
can I just say that I work with some of the stupidest people on earth. I hate them.
Just saying…
Lizziebeth - September 3, 2008
oh..
I hate that for you. You really should look for another job. Life is too short, and all that stuff… I don’t love my job all that much, but the people are pretty good to work with.
Just to cheer you up:
sddbaker - September 3, 2008
I totally whiffed...
…on the game thread today… that’s what a 2-hour call to Captaris tech support will do for your sanity.
gondeee - September 3, 2008
ok, so we lost…giants are winning…if they hang on, and the pirates & royals win…THREE WAY TIE FOR 4TH!!!! WAHOO!!!!!!!!!
bigjoe - September 3, 2008
yeah morton had a huge lead of 2 runs.
SayHeyWerd - September 3, 2008
uh, charlie had a 7 run lead that he blew, actually.
bigjoe - September 3, 2008
unless of course you’re confusing the white charlie morton with the mexican jorge campillo
bigjoe - September 3, 2008
Jorge is Spanish for Charlie.
BullManUGA - September 4, 2008
i always thought it was spanish for, you know, george.
bigjoe - September 4, 2008
MONSTROUS LEAD
SayHeyWerd - September 3, 2008
thankfully, only about 600 fans saw this game. 600! there are more people in this building on campus now than that! jesus lord
