Put Brandon Jones on that list of players having a good August. He has 5 of his 9 homers in this month and is sporting a 1.022 OPS on the month. Josh Anderson ties the International League's longest hit streak this season (I could have sworn I read it was 21 games) at 24 games. James Parr has been remarkably good this season and I think he will find his way onto the 40 man roster in the near future.

Mississippi 12, Carolina 3

J. Schafer 3-5 2 HR(9), 3 RBI, 2 K

Lots of offense in this game. Schafer is having a great August as we all know and also has 5 of his 9 homers in this month. He is making a late season push and might just force the Braves to send him to AAA to start next year. I'm sure we will see him in training camp. Todd Redmond also got his 12th win of the season. Brandon Hicks was also sent back to Myrtle Beach before after last night's game when Paul Bennett was activated from the DL.

Myrtle Beach 5, Wilmington 3

E. Mejia 2-4 2 HR(20), 3 RBI
C. Rivas 6IP 1H 0R 1BB 6K

Mejia is working on his 70 XBH on the seaso. I don't know anything about Carlos Rivas but a 6 inning 1 hitter always catches my eye. Hicks also played tonight with a double in 4 ABs.

Lake County 6, Rome 9

J. Heyward 1-3 BB
F. Freeman 2-3 BB, K
C. Johnson 2-4 3B, HR(23), 4 RBI, K
C. Kimbrel 1IP 2H 1R 0BB 0K

Heyward has a modest 6 game hitting streak going. Craig Kimbrel allowed his first run in Rome and only his second earned run since turning pro. I guess we should just write this kid off. Cody Johnson is slugging .681 this month and has 7 of his homers. These hitters are loving the hot weather aren't they?

Bristol 3, Danville 7

A pretty solid game from the Appy Braves. Jon Gilmore keeps his average right at .333 for the season. Shehan is flashing some of his hitting potential. I'm still calling him my sleeper bat in this draft. The guy destroyed the college ranks this season. And Francis continues his strong work, though 6Ks is a little too 'normal'. I was really hoping to see him K like 20 guys in a game.

Tiger 6, Braves 9

C. Culver 2-4 HR(2), 3 RBI, BB
C. Maddox 3-5 2 2B, 2 RBI
J. Hanson 1-2 2 BB
D. Delgado 5IP 6H 4R 1BB 4K

Delgado had his worst start of the season but the GCL team capped a rare night where all of the minor league teams won their games. Good work!

Saw tonight’s Mississippi game; great example of Jordan Schafer’s ability. The first homer was opposite field, a nice Chipper Jones style swing, a little flick and his natural power put it over the fence. The second one he just plain crushed. The kid is good.
Todd Redmond lets things get away from him a little in the 5th, but I love the way he pitches to contact and just lets the hitters get themselves out.
And finally, Stephen Marek is a great guy and absolutlely fits in with the Braves’ style of player.

Cody Johnson

His homerun broke the single season record for Rome (it was 22 by Eric Campbell). Johnson also got his first triple of the season. And it was his birthday.
So, happy birthday!

The Rome paper also said:
“He (Johnson) is batting .306 with 14 homers and 51 RBIs since the All-Star break, and has raised his overall average to .253 after hitting .219 in the first half.”

Not bad.

Jordan Schafer, CF, Double-A Mississippi (Braves)
It hasn’t exactly been a year to remember for Schafer, who began his season with a 50-game suspension for his involvement with performance-enhancing drugs. He did little upon his return, but in many ways those first weeks back were almost like his spring training, as he got his timing down while dealing with the distraction and embarrassment of his suspension. Lately, though, he’s been looking like the Schafer that burst onto the scene last year, going deep on Sunday to up his August line to a 15-game mark of .333/.387/.632, and assuring that his season line is no longer hard to look at, as it’s now a more than respectable .263/.367/.443. The tools are still there, the production is coming, and any attempt to write him off was highly premature

More love for Hanson over at BA

Forget about waiting for Tommy Hanson to veer off course. The Braves’ 2005 22nd-round pick—he signed for $325,000 out of Riverside (Calif.) CC in ‘06—continues to take a blow torch to the Southern League. And that may be putting it nicely. Brandishing his 12-to-6 curve along with a fastball, Hanson last Sunday struck out 10 covering six scoreless innings. It marked his third consecutive start with 10 strikeouts, giving him 93 strikeouts against 31 walks in 82 1/3 innings this season. Even better, he’s a model of consistency, with nine quality starts out of 15 since joining Mississippi in mid-May. That includes his nine-inning no-hitter on June 25.

Jordan Schafer

Schafer has serious potential. I was just examining his stats and heres what ive found. Yes he has struggled mightily against lefties which is to be expected. He is crushing righties with an OPS of almost 1.000.

All of this we already know.

Last year with Myrtle Beach when he supposedly was breaking out he had a 294 average with 9 homers a 477 slugging percentage, 354 OBP, and a 831 OPS. This year in less at-bats with Mississippi, he has a 269 average with 9 homers, a 469 slugging percentage, a 371 OBP, and a 840 OPS. He also has 41 walks in 260 AB’s this year as opposed to 40 walks in 436 AB’s last year. On top of all this, he is playing at Double AA which is a much harder level of competition.

no, but you have to understand. He had been downright horrible until two weeks ago. He is riding a hot streak right now that has brought his stats back to respectability, but before that he couldn’t climb over 230 for any extended period of time.

Schafer has actually improved this year! He has went through alot because of his own dumb decisions but his stats dont lie. He is putting up numbers equal or better than last season at AA Mississippi. It is not two weeks that can bring these kind of total numbers. He has went through huge slumps this season compared to last season but even that shows just how good this guy may be! I am really excited to see him play!
