Man versus Ligament

Add "doctor" to Tim Hudson's resume, because he seems to think he can "tough it out" and avoid Tommy John surgery.

Hudson was examined by different doctors Monday and Tuesday, who came to the same conclusion: Surgery is recommended, and the sooner the better. By having the procedure right away, Hudson might be able to pitch in the latter part of the 2009 season, the last year he's under contract with the Braves.

Look, I know it's a shock to be faced with that kind of career-altering surgery, but history has shown that it's not a choice, but a reality.

"I'm going to tough it out," Hudson said via a text message.

No, Tim, no you're not; the body doesn't work that way.

I really do feel for Timmy. You can see his anger in the comments he made; you can see his complete displeasure with this turn of events. The Braves don't need him to try and pitch again this season; 2008 is already a wash, but it would be nice to get him back at some point in 2009. He'll come around to the inevitable decision and then it will be official -- Tommy John surgery for our ace. We may want to get the CDC down to the Ted to see if that injury is contagious.

Disagree

We get him back at 70% late next season, eat his contract, then he leaves ATL.

or

He starts next year (he has had no discomfort so far) and MAYBE he needs surgery at some point during the season. Play him in his final contract year. Why should he miss next year so he can be healthy for another team in 2010?.

There’s a mutual option for 2010, at a reasonable $12 million. I would rather have him at 100% for 2010 than have him go down next year and have him out for the option year.

P.S.

It is time to rest the vets and start the B-team (Miller, Lillibridge, Francoeur) , the rest of this season should be auditions for next year’s club.

And for God’s sake, shut down Jair soon (or put him on a pitch count), before he joins the walking wounded. I want Morton and Hanson getting major-league practice.

+1

On the JJ pitch count.

Did you see Hampton?

It showed a shot oh Hudson sitting in the dugout during his last start and he was kind of shaking his arm around and looking at his elbow. And then Mike Hampton came over and TOUCHED Hudson’s elbow! That right there is your problem! It is contagious, and Hampton gave it to Hudson.

that’s what I’m saying, man! he’s passing around the TJ clap.

This is absolutely insane...

...is it just me, or do we send out pitchers to James Andrews more than the average team?

Taking advantage

Of the close proximity between Atlanta and Birmingham.

I guess…it’s like we have a shuttle bus going to his office.

It's a little known fact

But the east-west MARTA line periodically stretches all the way to Birmingham. Which explains a lot of the Alabama rejects that pollute our city from time to time. Braves pitchers and organizational members get their own cart fully stocked with pitching green, and several tables of Connect Four and Chinese Checkers for recreational travel in comfort, while the rest of the cars get this:
