Six Braves the Subject of Trade Talks

Could we see a Florida Marlins-style fire sale with the Braves in the next 48 hours? Here's this bit from AJC editorial columnist Jeff Schultz:

Frank Wren, the general manager, who said “a half-dozen” roster players are the subject of trade conversations and that, yes, discussions have been stepped up in the last 24 hours.

That's a considerable chunk of the team, and likely some guys that one would have thought were virtually untouchable a week ago. Schultz speculates as to who could be on the block:

Consider the ones who aren’t injured. Mark Teixeira: packed. Will Ohman: on several teams’ hot list. Jeff Francoeur, Mark Kotsay and Kelly Johnson: given circumstances and logic, all likely are part of trade discussions.

Apparently you can also add Mike Gonzalez to that list. Here are some of Wren's comments:

Like the rest of Atlanta, the Braves are covered with “For Sale” signs. The difference: Wren absolutely will move some property. Trade talks have been going on for weeks, he said.

But: “We’re in a position now to take those conversations further.” That wasn’t so subtle.

“When you come out of spring training and you feel like you have a good team, the last thing you want to do is get to Aug. 1 and trade parts of that team away,” Wren said. “That’s not the reason we do this [job]. But when you’re faced with it, you want to get the best return.”

It's gonna be a very different August and September in Atlanta. This is kind of a symptom lately in Atlanta sports; the Hawks are having trouble signing Josh Smith, the Falcons are going to suck for at least a year, the Yellow Jackets, well, they're the Yellow Jackets. I guess we'll all be Dawg fans for year or two.

My speculaton...

I bet Francoeur is gone. Just a feeling, but it seems like his name has popped up more and more in the last week as possibly being traded, almost like we’re being prepped to deal with it. Whether it’s a fire sale or not, I bet Frenchy goes, and in the days following we’ll hear things like, “A change of scenery will do him some good,” and the like. And maybe it would.

Just my guess.

I sincerely hope you're wrong.

I agree he’s been junk this year, but it makes no sense to me to trade him. A change of scenery does us no good when we trade him at his lowest ever value and he then starts producing the way we know he can.

Kotsay I can see. Tex definitely. Ohman fine. But KJ, Frenchy, and Gonzo? They’re supposed to be who we build our future around.

I know we aren’t going to trade all of them, but man its depressing to hear so many names that we’ve become attached to spring up in trade rumors.

Oh yeah.....

I hope I’m wrong, too…..I just have a bad feeling. I believe he’s got the talent and ability and all that, and he’s also one of my favorite players period. My family and I have been following him since his days in Rome, so we’d be crushed if he got traded. Yes, I understand that he’s been horrible this season, but I still believe he’ll turn things around.
But, yeah, I hope I’m wrong, too.

Also saw this from DOB

“I keep getting asked about Francoeur-to-K.C. trade rumors. Folks, I don’t know if there’s been any serious discussions. The Braves aren’t ready to give up on Francoeur, but I’m also sure they’ll listen if K.C. wants to start dangling pitching. The reason this rumor is worth keeping in mind is obvious: Royals GM Dayton Moore was the Braves’ farm director during Francoeur’s rise through the Braves organization.
From what I understand, Moore and Francoeur have remained in contact as friends since Dayton left a few years ago.”

The Falcons will suck for at least a year!?

Under-statement of the decade.

I HATE

THIS CRAP.

I hate it. I really hate it. I guess I invest too much “feeling” into the whole thing, but to me this is like just getting rid of family members or something. I know, it’s a business. Whatever.

Agreed

Since when has Atlanta moved to south florida and become the marlins? Fire sale? I know this has been an off year, but there is not sense in blowing up the team becoming the Gnats and throwing in the towel for the next year or two. Oh wait Frank Wren is at the helm… wheres JS when you need him.

I was kinda hoping that “Frank Wren as GM” really meant “Frank Wren as puppet for JS as GM” apparently, I was mistaken. Unless he’s having one of those brain fart years like he did when he let Bobby go in the 80s.

I was hoping the same

but I think we will see how this pans out if JS still has much of any say in this.

John Schuerholz didn’t fire Bobby Cox in the 80s.

My mistake, I thought he fired him in 81 before he went to the Jays

in 81, JS wasn’t even with the braves. he was building a kickass franchise in KC

My appologies to John. At least I have an excuse for “misremembering.” I wasn’t born until 85.

thats no excuse, i’m a year younger than you

Yeah,

that would be Ted that fired Bobby…

If Wren can get a big bounty for any of these guys

Then he needs to pull the trigger. Obviously with Tex and Ohman.

Gonzo I don’t want to see gone, but with so many teams interested, if we can get a big return (and I mean BIG!), then we should trade him. How many lefties are as dominant as him? Wagner? Ryan? Okajima? It’s a short list. And no, George Sherrill isn’t on that list.

I’m a big, big Kelly Johnson fan, but I think this organization undervalues him and doesn’t give him a fair chance. The only reason I’m willing to give him up is because I’d like to see Lilli take over at 2nd if that happens. We have a bit of a logjam in the infield so I think KJ or Lilli need to go. They’re just too valuable to have sitting on the bench or minors.

Keep in mind this is just Jeff Schultz doing some guessing/suggesting. I’d say there’s almost no chance Francoeur gets traded.
