Homerun Derby Open Thread

Just like Chris Berman does, sit back, crack open a fifth of bourbon, and turn on the pun machine. (First one to make a gondeee drinking joke gets banned.)

The order will be:

  1. Lance Berkman
  2. Ryan Braun
  3. Josh Hamilton
  4. Evan Longoria
  5. Justin Morneau
  6. Grady Sizemore
  7. Dan Uggla
  8. Chase Utley

I'm rooting for one of the little guys at the end to win.

Baseball Tonight at 7pm, Derby at 8pm.

Drink of choice

Coincidence that gondeee and appletini somewhat rhyme?

I guess I hope Braun or Uggla win it. I’m a NL guy but I loathe the Phillies and Berkman looks too much like a fag for me to root for.

Well since you said that...

...I’m pulling for Berkman.

you really need

to go look at roy’s latest fanpost…

I did...

and commented… :-)

I don't have a dog in this fight...

matter of fact, I don’t have a dog at all.

CHRIS BERMAN IS YELLING AT ME ALREADY AND I’M PISSED.

my pick is berkman, i’m cheering for EVAN~!!! though

At least we have Hall of Famer Joe Morgan for insight.

mustached insight

FUCK CHRIS BERMAN

Does he think people actually like him? Jesus Christ. I wish he would go the hell away.

Most Sportcenter anchors move on the other things after they’ve been there awhile-Dan Patrick, Keith Olberman, Charlie Steiner, Craig Kilborn. Why can’t Berman do it?

I think they should add an extra element of excitement to the Derby and put CB Bucknor behind the plate.

then it would be an ejection derby

How many HR's can you hit before CB throws you out?
HD

The homerun derby in HD is pretty awesome… I hope everyone else is so lucky.

Ha ha

Not even close! I’m still at work and, sadly, listening to it on the radio!

grady sizemore was REAKING

does HD allow you to smell the game too? Sounds like a tool of the devil!

Has anyone seen Chipper yet? I can’t picture him sitting on the ground.

i’d assume he’s on a throne somewhere. and i’m not talking about a toilet

They were all giving Utley a collective cock suck. I’m glad he flopped.

for what its worth…

NL HOME RUNS
1) Berkman 8
2) Uggla 6
3) everyone else

rick reilly is driving me more crazy than morgan & berman combined. jesus FUCK is he nuts

Hell yeah he is....

... bitching about having no Hispanics or Dominicans in the derby. What a fuckhead.

I couldn’t believe he went there either. What a dumbass. Let it alone. If Papi hadn’t been hurt, he would have been there, and that would be that.

CHIPPER SIGHTING! ...hat backwards, on a folding chair, with his kid. AWESOME

It's not his kid

He said All-star weekend was “Grown-ups only”

that wasn't Chipper...
Chipper's

Probably taking his BP at Shea with Brian McCann.

must be...

...I haven’t seen either of them.

JOSH HAMILTON

504 FEET!

Conference calls

suuuuuck

JOSH HAMILTON IS RAKING!!!!!!!!!!!!

Christ...

You think Wayne Krivsky would have taken Jeff Francoeur for Josh Hamilton this past offseason? I think he would have. What a fucking amazing baseball player.

WOW

Quite a show

they're getting shorter

not going as far… i think he’s getting tired

imagine hamilton in tampa this year. they’d be 15 games up

Wow

I guess it’s over now, huh?

You know you've won...

when the 71 year old BP pitcher is asked about the pitch count in round one

I love now

That how Hamilton is done, this is just live commentary, with some BP going on in the background.

baby, baby...

falling in love…. falling in love again….

Chicks dig the long ball,

you know.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ltD21rYWVw

Chicks dig the long ball woth Maddux and Glavine btw

Always curious

That was Heather Locklear, wasn’t it?

yes it was keen obvsersation… wasnt there some kind of relationship there or soemthing?

Alright Braun

Represent the NL for us, Pujols damn it.

I like how they talk about Hamilton's bye

When it’s really relieved that they can shave some time off this dreaded long event.

Imagine

if Nomar was in one of these… he’d have to adjust his gloves and sweat bands after EVERY pitch.

Can I just say that...

...Erin Andrews is really hot.

That’s about the only thing you can without anyone turning it into a drunk joke.

How's about a pictures screen
Crack is the new steroid.

thats messed up

Oh great

they’ve found a new way to make this shit longer

No kidding

I guess they have a time slot until 11 pm.

time slot goes from 8-10

but Hamilton decided to take up a half hour

Hamilton can’t hit the gold balls, and can’t win the guy a car. What a prick.

i cant wait for the all star celebrity softball tournament

anyone else?

didn't they do that yesterday?

ya but its always on again after the derby, and thats my tradition to watch it then

i checked my guide and you’re right… hopefully ESPN doesn’t preempt it

they better not i am promised quality comments from Kenny Mayne… damnit

I’m sure A-Rod will see this and buy that guy a car.

see that i mean. i know he’s not reading TC.

Guy with a sign that says "josh hamilton is a hero"

I really can’t stand the overuse of the word hero. Why he is a hero? Because he was a druggy and then found Jesus? Because he hits homeruns? Josh Hamilton may be an inspirational story to some, but he’s not a hero. Jeez. Sorry to get off topic, that shit just sticks in my craw.

I kind of agree

It was his own stupidity that put him into the situation he dealt with. I would love to see a stat wizard make a theoretic trail of what his stats could be based on minor league stats, natural progression, and all that stuff, and compare him to what he’s at now. I bet you anything had he been playing all those years he was sticking all sorts of needles and straws into him, he’d be an A-Rod/Pujols-type stat monster.

I dislike it when people try to rebut with “but the addiction!”, because he could avoided the torture by just saying no in the first place.

It was his own stupidity, and I’m not saying that he should be called a “hero” in the true sense of the word. I do give him all the credit in the world for coming back from where he was, to where he is now. Very few people could pull that off – not just coming back to baseball, but back to being a contributing member of society at all.

I just hope it keeps up – I don’t want him to relapse, because if he does, everything goes down the drain. That would be a bigger waste than the first time around.

There’s a great article out there, written by Hamilton himself, from the middle of last year some time. It was on espn.com. If I can find it I’ll post a link. I very rarely print things off the internets for posterity, but this one gives me chills every time I read it. I was getting chills last night too – I mean, how must it have felt for him when the fans were chanting his name during round one, and every single swing was resulting in a 450-foot-plus bomb? Wow.

What Hamilton did last night was amazing. What Hamilton has done to have gotten to last night is also commendable. But considering the circumstances that put him in the situation he needed to overcome to get to last night, I’ll never see him as a hero in the sense of that I’d want my future PujoliƱos to look up to. A sports hero, maybe. But nothing else. I seriously have to start watching ESPN events with the mute button engaged from now on.

Agreed

Hero is too strong. My Pujolina will know who he is, but she will also know how much more he could have been.

Thank Pujols

It’s over.

To think that she used to cover the Braves..... damn it all to hell.

so hot…

so hot…

You realize

That this is eventually going to escalate into a Jamie vs. Erin debate

I don’t know if I can decide. I eagerly await your upcoming photoshop…

Hey.....

...we’ve got Cy Young winners Braves fans over here!

Hmmm, I could possibly reason giving up a kidney...

or my appendix, or part of my large intestine to look like that. Would say left arm, but then I couldn’t switch hit anymore. Hey, wait, I don’t play very often…..and I could still throw a frisbee…
...and I don’t type that fast anyway.......

Just to make the boys cry ;P
