Minor League Recaps: 5/18

Norfolk 4, Richmond 8

  • J. Anderson - 2-4 3B
  • D. Hernandez - 2-4 2B, RBI, K
  • B. Jones - 2-3 2B, RBI, BB
  • B. Canizares - 2-3 SF, 4 RBI

Charlie Morton threw in this game and probably had his worst out of the year - and it was still a quality start - 6IP allowing 3 runs. I like what I have been seeing out of Brandon Jones so far in May. I think he is finally over whatever was bugging him injury wise. Hernandez has surprised me that he has been able to keep his average up this long and maintain some power. Anderson has rebounded as of later as well.

Mississippi 11, Chattanooga 17

  • M. Young - 3-3 RBI, BB
  • J. Perry - 2-4 2B, 3 RBI, K
  • V. Pope - 2-4 HR(1), 3 RBI, BB, K
  • T. Hanson - 2.2IP 5H 8R 3BB 5K 1HR

Wow. I think this is probably the worst start of Tommy Hanson's short career. He finally allowed his first homer this season. His wheels just came flying off in the 3rd. He cruised through the first couple of innings (the run he allowed came because of a wild pitch) but he just started walking guys and giving up XBH in the 3rd. The good thing to take out of this is he was still striking guys out and it looks like he just had one really bad inning. I did forget to mention yesterday that Van Pope has come back from the DL and he hit his first homer of the season tonight. He actually isn't hitting too poorly this year. Still a prospect?

Wilmington 8, Myrtle Beach 6

  • B. Hicks - 2-3 2 2B, 2 BB, SB
  • P. Britton - 1-5 HR(2)
  • B. Powell - 1-3 HR(3)

Man, all of our top pitching prospects are getting hammered today. Heath gave up 8 runs in 4IP. Ouch. Brandon Hicks whooped the ball though and Phil Britton keeps showing his flash of power.

Hickory 4, Rome 2

  • J. Heyward - 2-4 K
  • S. Shults - 1-3 HR(1), K

Another loss for the hapless Rome team. These guys have so much of our young talent but they just can't get anything going. Locke got rocked giving up 4 runs in 3.2 innings but walking 5 and allowing 5 hits. Again he did strike out 7. Sounds like he was overthrowing. The new guy, Stephen Shults, played in Danville last season and hit pretty well. He shows decent power from what I can tell but he struck out 67 times in less than 200 ABs last year. Thats bad. Maybe his time in instructional league paid off though. Anything to help this offense is welcome.

From Rome

You said it, Locke just wasn’t on today – well, except for the 7 guys he struck out. It really just looked like he wasn’t fooling anybody. Michael Fisher did have 2 errors at short, which didn’t help anything, but still – Hickory had Locke’s number.

Cole Rohrbaugh, by the way, will pitch in relief tonight (Monday), so look for that in Tuesday’s box score.

That’s how you spell it. It may not be how I sepll it, but that’s the right way!

Good grief

You know it’s bad when you can’t spell ‘spell.’

Don’t drink so early in the morning…

At least you haven’t been corrected by Todd Redmond’s Mom…lol

there’s GOTTA be a story about that. DO TELL!

Nothing really, I transcribed the wrong stats for Redmond’s last start. There’s a comment from “MOM” correcting my stat line for Mr. Redmond. lol
