Trading from Depth

Before the season started, Baseball America came out with their top-10 prospect list for the Atlanta Braves. The top three spots on that list read:

  1. JarrodSaltalamacchi

  2. Elvis Andrus

  3. Matt Harrison

Those three prospects, the top three in the organization, plus two other pitching prospects were just sent packing to the Texas Rangers for Mark Teixeira - perhaps you've heard this trade mentioned recently. I think many people are asking themselves, "how could the team trade their top three prospects for one guy?" Heck, when the very same Rangers traded Alex Rodriguez - usually considered the best player in the game - all they got was Alfonso Soriano and Joaquin Arias. Certainly Teixeira equals less of a return than A-Rod.

This unfortunately was not the case. Several factors contributed to the inflated price of the former Georgia Tech slugger. The biggest factor was probably the Braves' need for a hitter at the trade deadline, and the competition they faced for that hitter from other teams. Another factor was the fact that Teixeira was pretty much the only hitter who was put on the trade market. So to get him the Braves had to pay a heavy price. Of course the real price will not be known until these prospects, all of whom are still in the minors except for Saltalamacchia, make it to the majors a couple of years from now. And for several of these players who are only 18, it could be three or four years before they make their debut.

Where does that leave the Braves minor league development system? A system that has been instrumental in graduating key players like McCann, Francoeur, James, Johnson, and the Jones boys to the majors for more than a decade. I think the answer to that is actually in the trade itself. The Braves wouldn't have traded away their top three prospects if they didn't think their minor league depth could sustain the blow.

A quick look at just the Braves double-A level reveals that they had eight players make that level's All-Star team. One of those was Harrison, but three others have already made appearance in the majors this season. Another, Brandon Jones, has already made it to triple-A and may get called up when rosters expand in September. Below them, guys like Kris Medlen, Tommy Handon, and Deunte Heath are pitchers who are marching their way through the Braves system. And other players such as Kala Kaaihue, Dan Smith, Brent Lillibridge, and Jamie Richmond are finding success at each stop on their way to the majors.

Trading away the super-talented Andrus was made easier by the success of Yunel Escobar who graduated to the majors this year, as well Brent Lillibridge who is right on Escobar's heels at triple-A. The star debuts of 2007 draftees like Brandon Hicks and Travis Jones likely gave credence to the notion that we had more than enough depth at the shortstop position.

While three of the Braves first four draft picks in 2007 were high school players, the next eleven players they drafted were all collegiate players; that usually means a player is closer to the majors than one drafted right out of high school. This could mean the Braves system will get restocked faster than it has in previous years when the Braves took more high school talent in the draft. Another factor helping to restock the system is a change in the MLB draft rules which prevents teams from using draft-and-follow as a draft strategy. This was something the Braves had used very effectively in the past, but they are now forced to try and sign their draft picks the very same season. Combine the glut of leftover draft and follow players signed just before this year's draft with the extra signees from this year's draft and we have a lot more players coming into our system than normal.

The real story of the Mark Teixeira trade is not what we gave up, but what we have left. The truth behind the trade is that we could afford to give away our top three minor league talents and still have a full stable of major league caliber prospects waiting in the wings. Many of those prospects are in the lower levels, and while some may be as good as the guys we traded away, they simply haven't made a name for themselves yet. But in the coming year the strength of the Braves system to restock itself will once again be proven.

your right!!
I have been keeping up with the Braves minor leagues for years now and we have a glutton of infield prospects.you mentioned 2 good ones in jones and hicks..and don't forget the talented lefty's in Danville. So I think the Braves will be fine.
Not To Mention...
The truth is that we have the right kind of prospects for the potential holes in our line-up.  Kala will be ready if Tex leaves after 2008, Yunel can play 3B if Chipper retires and Campbell/Pope don't turn things around, Lilli joins Yunel as potential long-term answers at SS while doubling as a possible OF and guys like B. Jones, Blanco and eventually Schafer give us plenty of OF depth.  Add those guys to Heap, Kelly and Frenchy and your team is set for a long time to come.  Pitching is a bit more of a concern, but the guys hitting free agency soon and the trades we've been able to swing in the past give me hope that an ace will be brought in to replace Smoltz and pair with Huddy when the time comes.  Guys like James, Reyes and Smith can hold down the fort until the Hansons of the minors are ready to step up.
Bravo.
That's college thesis material right there.
Gondeee
Julio Franco JUST got designated for assignment!!!
Do you think...
...anyone would put in a waiver claim for him?

I figure he goes unclaimed and the Braves outright him to the minors until September 1.  Maybe even ship him to the low minors and let him coach the young guys.

Jose Ascanio also was sent down to make room for Mahay and Dotel.

WOW
I guess they wanted to keep the young guy (Thorman). Maybe they saw that Julio didn't have his swing back. What I worry about here is a letdown for the players, since most of the Braves really respected Julio. As a PH I would have thought Julio would be a better option.
I think
there plan is to let KK come up in '09, and let Thorman play LF in '09 as well.
Thor...
..doesn't have the legs or the glove to play a corner outfield spot in the Majors. Yes he made his debut there last year - but that was to JUST get him some playing time.
Thorman LF 09
Jordan Schafer should be ready in 09. So he can play centerfield for us with Brandon Jones and Jeff Francoeur to the right and left of him.

I also...
wondered what kind of effect this would have on the other players.  Julio might not have the same swing as he has had in the past but he is a well-liked player and I hope this doesn't negatively effect the Braves, especially with how happy everybody seemed to be after the trade deadline.  Atleast Julio can still hit the breaking ball, which is more than I can say about Thorman (lately when I pronounce his name I pretend that the T is silent because that is how he is playing!)
Gondeee
You think that JS and BC can convince Julio to play Full time First base in Richmond and come back for the callups!!! He would be More valuable in the Playoffs as a Pinch hitter than Thorman!!!
I echo...
...what Rain Delay said. Julio will likely make it through waivers - heck we were able to get him AFTER he passed through waivers the first time (after his release from the Mets). If he accepts it, an assignment to Richmond to play everyday would be the best thing for Julio. Heck, the guy played in Mexico and Korea, so Richmond should be a no-brainer if there's a hint of a promise that he could be added back when rosters expand in September. That's my hope.
Thorman stays, Franco goes
I'm sure Thorman would have been sent down instead if he had options left, especially with Richmond short on outfielders at the moment.

But wouldn't Julio need to be on the major league roster on August 31 to be eligible for the postseason roster?

Yeah..
..it was easier to DFA Julio because most likely no one is going to pick him up. On the other hand if they had DFA'd Thorman he'd have been claimed off waivers from someone.
that should have been
the 40-man roster.
Love the Trade
Think about it...

we're a mid-market team. The days of winning the division every year are OVER. You may only get a 2-3 year window. Teixeira opens that window this year AND next.

Frankly, I thought he looked great in a Braves uniform. I can't remember being this excited about a new acquisition...maybe Gary Sheffield...

And even if the farm system is now barren...remember, we have the 3rd youngest roster in all of baseball! (now what Julio has been DFA)

Anyone
Have a list of free agent pitchers this off season? DO you guys think we might make a run for a quality 3rd starter when we free up money when andruw leaves?
Pitchers
Carlos Zambrano
Curt Schilling
Bartolo Colon
Jason Jennings
Kyle Lohse
Randy Wolf
Andy Petite
Tim Wakefield
ummm...
3rd starter type fits only a few of those names.

Bartolo Colon (Only recent struggles say this)
Jason Jennings (4th starter or less)
Kyle Lohse
Randy Wolf
Tim Wakefield

I'd prefer Wakefield. his knuckle balling ways work well with good D behind him and the braves do have that.

What?
Pettitte doesn't fit in there? (even though his option will probably be picked up by Yanks)
Just say no..
...to both Wakefield and Colon.

I've never been a Wakefield fan, and for god sakes Colon is horrible. He's not what he once was and will never be that way again. But because pitching is sooo overvalued someones going to pay him a lot of dough regardless of the year he's having.

so agree
about Wakefield. Don't know anything about Colon, though, except that he has an unfortunate name.
Well
you'd have to get Mirabelli with him, since he's the only one who can catch the Knuckle.
Pitchers
Tom Glavine should be a great #3 starter in our rotation next year. But I think JS will trade Edgar Renteria for a starter next year(Garland, Blanton, Snell, or Lowry)
this
seems likely enough to me. JS is more wlling to aquire people through trade than spend money on the open market. Mostly because we haven't had it recently (money). We still don't know exactly what Liberty will do with the payroll. I think it is more likely they increase payroll than decrease it. Probably most likely that they keep it the same
Possibility
Rich Harden has been mentioned as a trade target for the Braves about a month ago but his arm issues nixed any possibility of that.

If he emerges from the season without any further surgery that might be a possibility since the A's can't seem to keep Bobby Crosby healthy for more than a week at a time.  I would think that Billy Beane would find Edgar a welcome addition.

Trade
Braves get: Harden and Street!

A's get: Rent, Thor, and 2 prospects

LOL
I would straight up FAINT if we got Harden and Street. Not that I would be upset . . . or even very happy necessarily . . . it would just freak me out.
