Talking Chop

Happy Holidays!

Martin has left Atlanta for the weekend, but he wanted me to wish each and every one of you a very Happy Holiday! Thank you for your continued support of Talking Chop!

And now for my little present to Martin...

As we approach the end of the year at Baseball Digest Daily, I took a look back at some of our finer experiences from 2006. I thought this would be an interesting way to recap the year while giving the entire baseball community credit for the work they have done in 2006.

Our first installment recognized the top personalities of 2006, and your very own Gondeee made the list! Here's the little clip from the article:

Martin Gandy, BDD Staff Member and Author of Talking Chop: Martin has become, to the best of my knowledge, the first beat blogger in baseball! When I started TC for SB Nation, I quickly realized I wasn't going to be able to fulfill the daily writing requirements for multiple sites. I recognized Martin's writing on a blog he just started. He was really good, entertaining, and he had Braves season tickets...a definite plus! I offered Martin the opportunity to take over TC and boy did he run with it. He became a member of the BDD staff as well, and we quickly got him credentialed with the help of the Atlanta media relations department. The rest is history. Martin is now known around the Braves locker room as the Brian McCann clone with glasses!

Congratulations to Gondeee and the rest of Talking Chop on a great year!

From Will Carroll's Blog
"there are still at least six teams involved in some discussions centering on Atlanta."

The five teams that I've seen connected to the Braves in print thus far are the: Pirates, Yankees, Orioles, Devil Rays and Rangers.  A later comment leads me to believe that the Marlins are the sixth team.

"The Braves are in full dump mode, trying to get something for Andruw Jones, trying to find Jones' replacement on the cheap, and working more on the bullpen"

This statement scares me, though trading most of our expensive parts is certainly not a terrible idea.

"The team is determined to find a solid bullpen and think they can do it with a series of deals that include LaRoche, Mike Gonzalez, Andruw Jones, and several CF candidates that I'm told include Rocco Baldelli, Curtis Granderson, and Nick Markakis. The deals appear to also have some other big names like Tim Hudson, Mark Teixeira, and Dontrelle Willis on the periphery."

This is the sort of creativity that I've come to expect from the Braves front office.  I'm the first to admit that I propose some off-the-wall trades, but if you think up enough of those, you'll stumble across a legitimately good idea.  Both the Rangers and Orioles could make competative offers for Andruw and I'm sure few have thought of those possibilities.  We could send some of the young pitching we get from Baltimore to Tampa as part of a package for Baldelli or Teixeira to New York for my personal favorite unexpected trade target: Robinson Cano.  Lot's of action going on right now, a lot of action...

Interesting
Do you have a link to that post? DOB at the AJC says the Braves are in "bunker mode" and that no leaks are coming out of the Atlanta front office. I'm guessing there's a lot of action, but we're probably only seeing the tip of the iceberg of ideas above the surface. Very interesting stuff.
Thanks Joe!
I've had a great time writing the blog and especially getting the access that I've gotten. I still have to pinch myself just to make sure I'm not stuck in some wild fantasy. Many thanks to Joe for taking a chance on me and having so much faith that I could do the job. And thanks to everyone who reads and leaves comments, it lets me know that none of this is falling on deaf ears. I'm really looking forward to 2007, not only for the Braves, but also for the SB Nation and this blog. They have some great things planned that will help enhance the fan experience and make all of this even more interactive - can't wait!

gondeee,

Carroll posted it yesterday in the afternoon, so everything may have changed since then.  I hope this helps the rumor mill along!
