Let the post-meeting buzzwords be "Adam LaRoche to," and then fill in your team. He is certainly a commodity that the Braves think several teams have interest in, and they are going to try and use him to fill their other needs. The two most important factors here are (1) we STILL have needs at lead-off, second base, left field, and possibly bullpen for a lefty, and the Braves realize they need to plug one or more of these holes, and (2) this is as strong an indication as any that they believe Scott Thorman is capable of handling first base. Now on to the rumors.
The most talked about one seems to be the LaRoche to the Pirates, Gonzo to the Yankees, and Melky Cabrera to the Braves. This seems a bit out of balance with the Braves getting the short end of the stick. With this proposal we're essentially saying that each of these players has equal value, when the one we would be getting has far less experience and is less proven than the other two, and therefore has less real value. It seems that someone like Scott Proctor would even this trade out real fast, and that would satisfy the value that Schuerholz has been trying to get in return for LaRoche all winter - essentially a lead-off guy and an arm - be it Figgins/Shields from Anaheim or Roberts/Penn from Baltimore. I would be wary to trade away LaRoche for just one player like Cabrera - my opinion of Yankees prospects is that they are routinely overvalued because of all the extra hype that comes out of the New York media machine (Navarro, Rivera, Claussen, Thames, Griffin).
The other trade that has crept back into our consciousness is the LaRoche to Baltimore for Brian Roberts rumor. I find any trade that involves the Orioles and Brian Roberts to be a waste of time. Their owner, Peter Angelos, seems dead set on killing any reasonable trade that has Roberts in it. This would lead to him being overvalued and the Braves giving up way too much in return.
Now to Scott Thorman as our everyday first baseman. On the plus side, his second year at every level throughout his career has been much better than his first, so we could argue that he will adjust to the Majors and find some level of success. The negative side is that his true ability to handle the everyday duties is wildly unknown, and the Braves system would seem to be scant of any other Major League ready options at first base. But when LaRoche or Thorman are going to be hitting in the seventh spot in the order, do we really need THAT much production from them. LaRoche may in fact be the best hitter in baseball batting in the seventh spot next year if he's still with the Braves. Another possibility to consider is that trading LaRoche might seriously deplete the power in our lineup. We have to operate under the assumption that Andruw is going to leave next year, and we are therefore left with a power void in the middle of the order - something LaRoche seemed to prove that he could fill last year. So trading LaRoche means that we might lose 80 something homeruns from our lineup in a span of two years.
The more and more I toss it about, the more risky these trades seem to be. I am of the opinion that we should certainly get more in return for Laroche than just a bat, and with multiple suitors for LaRoche's services next year we may be able to play one against the other. A bat plus an arm would be the two items on my wish list - filling two needs while trading away only one player.

LaRoche
Really, if the Braves are so intent on trading LaRoche why not do a straight up with Pittsburg for Gonzalez and 2nd baseman Castillo? Plug Castillo in the leadoff spot and keep Gonzalez or try to spin him for a bat such as Alex Rios of Toronto. I wouldn't want the Yankees involved at all unless we can get Melky and Proctor. I still think the Braves should try and get Baldelli for Davies, Salty and Larew. If we are not going to make Salty into a firstbaseman then we have no need for him with McCann catching.Bravosfan - December 18, 2006
Melky
Cabrera is a 22-year-old with great plate discipline, and the Braves have one full-time outfielder in 2008 - Jeff Francouer. He is also a zero-to-three who costs basically nothing (380K vs 20,000K that Andruw will get paid in 2008.)LaRoche is in the rapidly escalating path for salaries now and plays a position that can be filled with 15-20 HR hitters rather easily by a run-of-the-mill GM much less someone of Schuerholz' ability.
I agree Castillo and Gonzalez seems to be a better fit.

Cano
If we're going to be dealing with the Yankees, I would want Cano back. He fills the 2B hole and could easily fit into a leadoff role. It just makes too much sense to not at least ask about him. If I couldn't get Cano from the Yankees, I'd throw the Yankees side out of the deal. Just trade LaRoche to the Pirates for one of their young pitchers and Andrew McCutcheon. We might have to throw in Lerew to get that done, depending on what pitcher we went after.McCutcheon may not be ready to play this season, but he would be there to fill the void left by Andruw after this season. And getting one of their pitchers, say Gorzelanny, would allow us to trade Davies and Escobar in an attempt to get Baldelli or Alex Rios from Toronto.

Melky...
Even though this is a rumor right now I had to look up Melky's numbers because I really didn't know too much about him. He batted at the bottom of that loaded lineup obviously so you think his numbers would be skewed because he would see fastballs...Cabrera took a lot of walks! http://www.baseball-reference.com/c/cabreme01.shtmlAfter looking at his numbers I like him and I hope we get him. He could develop power but it's not important...Furcal never hit over 15 homers for us, but didn't it seem like he had more power than that? Melky can play center and I bet he takes over for Andruw WHEN we lose him. Langerhans could see some competition from him and that's a good thing.
SELL HIGH!!

grumble
I really doubt that LaRoche will be traded for anything that we are foreseeing now. JS has been really good at surprising everyone with moves that have never hit the rumor mill. (I'm guessing that he punishes other teams for having leaky offices by killing deals that get leaked.)Anyhow, I think next year 2B will be an Aybar/KJ platoon, and LF will be Diaz most of the time, with Langerhans taking a lot of late innings.
I think LaRoche will be traded, but not until midseason, when his trade value will be much higher than it is now. I think this makes sense, because we'll hopefully be able to give Thorman some playing time to see if he has improved enough to take the position over.

I say
we got back to Seattle and see what they offer us for Laroche. Hopefully we can pry Felix hernandez away from them since he seems to be on the decline. (sarcasm)Laroche is one of those players where I am alright if they do trade him as long as we get something worthwhile for him. And I'm alright if we keep him around because i don't think last year was a career year. Too much of a link between him changing medication and him hitting really well. I have plenty of faith in thorman but not enough if we don't get something like Mike Gonzales back.yondaime4 - December 18, 2006
melky and proctor...
is too much for the yanks to give up for gonzalez.also, it would be stupid for js to kill deals with leaky offices. (not that i'm saying he isn't doing that, because i think he's extremely overrated.) he'd be limiting his options severely just to make a lame statement.

killing deals
Well, I'm not saying that he is, but there is a definite correlation between what the media says the Braves might do and what actually happens. In that they never intersect. It wouldn't be disadvantageous to discourage that kind of action, though. Having trades leaked out beforehand can severely damage your leverage in any other trades that might be under development at the time.

good post gondee
Couldn't agree more. The whole 3-way trade just doesn't make sense, especially for us.Also, Robinson Cano is one of Steinbrenner's golden boys (like Jeter). It'd take a lot to trade for him. I don't see it happening. But I like the idea of swinging a deal for Rios. I've heard nothing but positives about that guy.

CF
I like the idea of trying to line up potential replacement for Andrew this year and let him cut his teeth with the Braves in LF for '07. However, I keep hearing Melky's name tossed around. Has anyone actually seen him play in CF? I was always under the impression that he was a LF/RF...not a true CF. He may be able to get along in CF..but so could Kelly Johnson. Heck..I bet Franceour could hold his own in CF. If we are going to trade a big..up and coming bat like LaRoche I would want someone you know can go into CF. So out of the names I have heard that leaves Baldelli or Rios. Either would cover the Braves need for a true CF. KEep in mind that with the names we have heard it appears that the Braves are looking more to put a decent bat in LF this year and line up a CF replacement for '08 because none of the names that have been mentioned are legit top shelf lead off guys.As for trading LaRoche in general; he is now at the age where he is hitting his peak. I didn't like what I saw of Thorman and feel he could be a little ways away. Do you want to trade away a guy who I think could turn into a consistent .280 35 115 type guy? Right now he seems a waste hitting 7th, but someone had a good point in that he becomes the heir apparent to hit 4th next year. McCann was tremendous last year, but it is dangerous to assume a catcher will hit that well EVERY year. It is also dangerous to assume that Jeff will mature enough as a hitter to move into the #4 slot next year. If you trade LaRoche for say...Caberra this is what the line up would look like for '08
Caberra CF
Renteria SS
C. Jones 3B
McCann C
Franceuor RF
Thorman 1B
LF: Johnson??
2B: Aybar??
You have subtracted 80 HRs by losing LaRoche and Andrew and replaced it with what...35? Maybe 40? You think Franceour has problems taking a walk now...wait until he hits #5 w/o any legit protection.

Langerhans and LF option
While I think Langerhans could be any everday CF defensively...I think we saw last year that he does not hit enough to be more then a 4th or 5th OF. Diaz is the same thing...I believe he can be a good contributor as a platoon partner, but he is not an every day player. I think if you play Thorman or KJ in LF he still fits well as the RH compliment. To make another point; there are some short term..gambles...options etc that could be had for LF. Perhaps signing Shannon Stewart to a one year deal to play LF and leadoff? This would buy some time to make the right deal for LaRoche..rather then jus tmake a deal.
